XLV° Tafust Imazighen
45th Amazigh Spring
Tafsut Imazighen – the Amazigh Spring – is one of the most significant moments in the long struggle of the Amazighs to restore their historic rights in their country.
It emerged following the great popular uprising of the Kabyles in Algeria, which began on April 20, 1980, in Tizi-Wezzu, Kabylia, and was violently suppressed by the Algerian authorities. Since then, popular marches and commemorative cultural activities have been organized every year, not only in Kabylia but also in other amazigh regions of Algeria, as well as in other Tamazgha countries and the diaspora.
Since 2021, the celebration of Tafsut Imazighen has been banned in Algeria. It is highly feared that it will be prevented again this year. This is a very serious violation of the right of the Kabyle people and all Amazigh people in Algeria to keep their memory alive and honor their traditions.
The Amazigh people of Morocco, facing the same fundamental challenges, have decided to celebrate Tafsut Imazighen this year by organizing two major popular marches on April 20th, one in Rabat and the other in Marrakech. Thousands of Amazigh women and men of all ages will converge from all regions of Morocco on Rabat and Marrakech, demanding their rights to their ancestral lands, their natural resources, their language, and for the recognition of the Amazigh identity of the Moroccan state.
Other commemorative events for this 45th Amazigh Spring are planned for the same day by the Amazigh diaspora in several cities across Europe (notably Paris and Brussels) and in North America (the USA and Canada).
The Amazigh World Congress (CMA) naturally supports all these demonstrations and calls on all Amazighs and their friends to participate en masse. The Amazigh voice must be heard loud and clear so that it is heard by governments and that the discrimination, injustices, and rights violations affecting the Amazighs can cease.
The CMA once again urges international bodies, particularly the UN, to compel governments in North Africa to cease their segregative and aggressive policies against the Amazigh and to respect international law on human and peoples' rights. Special attention must be paid to the Kel-Tamasheq (Tuareg) people, particularly in the Azawad region, where civilians are suffering atrocities at the hands of the Malian army and Wagner Group mercenaries.
The CMA takes the opportunity of the celebration of Tafsut Imazighen to once again demand the immediate release of all Amazigh political detainees in Algeria and Morocco. Those responsible for their arbitrary detention must be identified, prosecuted, and severely punished.
